My Journey - From Job Frustration To Career Success (And Vocation Fulfilment)
Hello! I’m Neil Grant, the person behind the Vocation Master programme, and I want to tell you something about the origins of my Job Search Masterclass training course which aims to solve a major problem that the vast majority of job hunters face. And that problem is that conventional work-search procedures don’t work for most people.
To show you what I mean, let me tell you about my career journey which has taken me from doing really bad work to doing exceptionally good work.
Doing Good Work
Right now, I’m fortunate to work alongside some of the most inspiring and motivated people that you’ll find anywhere. I travel throughout Europe to show them how to get hired to do their perfect jobs, help them achieve their highest-level goals at work (and away from it), and acquire a well-paid and secure future for themselves and their families.
I can afford to be selective about who I work with. I have complete agency over my actions and decisions and earn a pay package that reflects my achievements. Above all, I enjoy the lifestyle benefits of professional success that are impossible to put a monetary value on. I’ve reached the pinnacle of my vocational goals and, because of this, I love what I do.
But it wasn’t always this way, I can assure you.
Doing Bad Work
At the start of my working life I struggled to find my professional path. I took on duff jobs that were a poor fit for me, worked for some really terrible employers and suffered serious stress and burnout along the way. I’ll admit that I knew what I didn’t want to do more than what I did want to do, but this problem was compounded by my frustrating experiences as a (relatively frequent) job hunter.
I applied for so many jobs that I lost count of them all. I interviewed for some and was offered a few, but nothing seemed quite right for me. And remember, this was back in the days when work-search competition was nowhere near today’s levels, but I still felt that my chances of landing a perfect job were fairly remote because of all the other candidates I was up against.
Out Of Control - Of My Work And My Life
The common factor was that I never felt in control of my work or my future, and it was a depressing feature of my life at the time. I was aware that opportunities in my field were thin on the ground, or so it seemed when I considered the limited number of advertised openings that fit my background and experience. I repeatedly accepted the least-worst work option that was available to me. I worked for one low-quality employer after another, doing one bad job after the next.
I couldn’t figure out what I was doing wrong. But then I made a decision that marked the end of doing bad work and the start of doing very good work indeed.
Finding The Answers To Some Simple Questions
You see, I became determined to find the answers to some simple, yet profound, questions;
- Why does one group of people find great work with fantastic employers whilst another group doesn’t?
- Why does the first (very large) group face enormous job-search competition, receive few invitations to interview and struggle to find high-quality work that really works for them?
- Why does the second (much smaller) group not suffer any of these challenges?
I was sick and tired of failing in my search for good work, time and time again, and I was desperate to find a way of joining the elite group of successful job hunters who seemed very different to me.
After several career false starts, and by accident more than design, I took a position in recruitment and eventually became my company’s principal job interviewer. I’d finally found something I quite enjoyed and was pretty good at. But there was more to it than that because this was the event that triggered my change in fortunes.
Average, Terrible And Fantastic
Observing the application and interview behaviours of around fifteen hundred short-listed job candidates was revelatory. Most of these people were distinctly average, the worst were really terrible, but a handful were absolutely fantastic. The best were so clearly head and shoulders above the rest that it made my head spin.
I systematically analysed what they were doing that everyone else wasn’t, and committed to finding out why these people were almost always offered the jobs they were pitching for.
What common strategies were they deploying that grabbed my instant attention as a recruiter? How did they convince me that they were ideal new staff members whom I should hire without delay?
What was the magic job-hunting stardust that they sprinkled about?
Perfect Interview Strategies
The answers to these questions formed the basis of the interview courses I began to offer, way back in the 1990s, by way of my own business communication-skills training company. I’ve since perfected my interview strategies by working with hundreds of demanding clients, including national banks, major conglomerates and government departments. I’ve trained countless professional interviewers and hiring managers, and acted as an interview consultant, advising on candidate and interviewer performance.
I also work with motivated job hunters who want to eliminate all of the hassles that are bolted on to conventional recruitment procedures, helping them develop a range of advanced work-search skills that shoot them straight to the front of the hiring line.
They get the benefit of my close-up work with interview professionals and all of my associated expertise.
This Is The Job-Search Problem
The challenges that almost every job hunter faces, if they follow the usual pattern of looking for work, fall into three categories: too much competition, not enough information and poorly constructed interviews.
I’ve analysed each of these problems, dismantled the entire work-search process and rebuilt it from the ground up to create a compelling solution.
My strategy addresses each of the issues and reverses them to suit the needs of today’s motivated job hunters. There are a few numbers below which summarise the competition factor - and the benefits that you'll enjoy when you've cracked the solution.
And This Is The Job-Search Solution
My Job Search Masterclass is a distillation of decades of experience on the front line of recruiting, interviewing and training. In a nutshell, it removes all of the flaws that are standard features of a conventional, and extremely dysfunctional, work-search process.
You completely eliminate competition from other job hunters. You engineer personal introductions to company insiders and gain referrals to hiring decision makers. You take total control of job interviews and pitch yourself in a way that wins job offers most of the time.
I‘ve trained and coached countless job hunters to use my advanced hiring strategies and deploy supremely-persuasive interview techniques during high-stakes work searches. I’ve monitored their progress and observed their successes and, as a result, I know what the best of the best do.
A very small number of them are naturals but the vast majority have started from scratch and learnt these crucial work-search skills from the ground up. They get into work-search character, find the best jobs with the best employers, obtain referrals to key decision makers and nail absolutely any job interview.
And you can do all of these things too, so I’m inviting you to become a member of a select group of job hunters who understand how to game the recruitment system to their advantage.
Sam's Story
Sam had a problem. He’d applied for hundreds of positions, attended 83 video interviews and 38 face-to-face meetings in the 2 years since he’d left university, and flunked every single one of them. There was always a better-qualified person, a more experienced one or someone who fitted the employer’s profile more accurately. At any rate, that was the story he was given by all the employers who rejected him.
But the story Sam told himself was even worse because the little voice in his head was telling him he was a loser. His confidence was at rock bottom, even though he’d worked his socks off and done everything the careers gurus had told him. He convinced himself that he’d never get anywhere, that he’d never fulfil his potential, that he’d never find a good job with a great employer. One that was secure, well-paid and satisfying, doing something that allowed him to use his skills and strengths in a way he’d studied for and always dreamt of.
Then Sam discovered Vocation Master
Sam realised that he’d previously been doing things wrongly, using an old-school method of looking for work that was hopelessly ineffective. He’d been throwing himself into an ultra-competitive job-hunt contest that relied on too much chance, deferred all of the decision making to other people and threatened to snuff out his career ambitions.
But now things were different. Sam learnt how to find lucrative job opportunities before they became available to anyone else, then discovered the secret to getting personally introduced to hiring decision makers who urgently needed his talents. He quickly developed high-level interview skills that allowed him to showcase his true abilities during an employment meeting with a prestigious employer who hired him within days.
Vocation Master benefit #1 – zero competition
If you’re looking for an employed position with a private-sector organisation, and you’d like to eliminate all of the competition from people who want the same job as you, you’ve come to the right place.
Three Essential Job-Search Skills You Must Master
This course focuses on developing the three most-essential job-search abilities you need. You’ll learn how to…
- Discover perfect work opportunities before anyone else has found them.
- Facilitate personal introductions and direct referrals to hiring decision makers.
- Take control of any job interview so that you guide its format, agenda & outcome.
1: Find Work Opportunities Before Anyone Else
Locating fantastic employment openings that perfectly suit your work skills and personal needs is the first step in my strategy. I show you how to find lucrative opportunities with high-quality employers before anyone else has discovered them.
2: Facilitate Personal Introductions & Referrals
Identifying attractive employers, then manoeuvring yourself into the orbit of well-placed company insiders who can advise and advocate on your behalf, is one of the keys to work-search success. I show you how to do this easily and effectively.
3: Take Control Of Interviews & Hiring Meetings
The business end of a job hunt comes with a face-to-face interview. You’ll learn the most effective pitching strategies that deliver the highest chance of winning a job offer. I show you how to tip the odds in your favour by taking control of every phase of any hiring meeting.
Once you’ve mastered each of these work-search skills, you’ll be brimming with confidence and fully prepared to take the next upward step in your career. But these three pillars are only the starting point of your job-hunt project, because I cover much more in this fully-featured course.
The Job Search Masterclass Course Syllabus
Part One: The Job-Search Problem
It’s essential to understand a problem before you formulate a solution, so I analyse three major challenges of doing your work and looking for a new job in lessons 1 to 3.
Lesson 1: When Work Isn’t Working
What you need to know about the state of employment in 2024, how the work landscape has changed profoundly since the time your parents entered the workforce, and why it’s crucially important to understand what’s going on in the work arena in order to succeed.
Why so many people are doing jobs that don’t satisfy their basic needs, how bad work stifles your career potential, doesn’t allow you to play to your strengths and severely limits your earnings, and how to follow my job-search route map towards doing good work instead.
What you can learn from statistics about workplace disengagement, why as many as 85% of employed people are doing jobs that don’t engage them in any meaningful way, and how to become one of the 15% of workers who are positively engaged.
Lesson 2: Burn Out, Fade Away
Why we’re doing jobs that are increasingly insecure, the reasons that employers are prioritising their workers’ interests less and less, and why an analysis of what’s going on behind the scenes will help you understand why workplace anxiety, stress and sickness are at record levels.
The reasons that burnout is so prevalent in today’s workplace, what’s causing as many as 20% of employees to become burnt out, and why this can lead to serious psychological and physical illnesses if you don’t insulate yourself from this possibility.
The alarming phenomenon of fadeaway, why it’s much more than the junior version of burnout, and the reasons you should be aware of its gateway effects in order to stop this condition damaging you.
Lesson 3: Dumb Work Search
How conventional work-search procedures are designed to reveal your weaknesses and not your strengths, why dysfunctional hiring processes only serve the interests of recruitment flunkies and not motivated job applicants, and how to work around these difficulties.
Why CVs and resumes are seriously problematic and the 6 reasons you should get rid of them immediately, how formal vacancy applications instantly mark you out as a low-quality job candidate and how to avoid falling into this trap.
What’s going on beneath the surface of any kind of standard-format job interview, why you need to recognise the most-decisive factor when it comes to hiring decisions, and how to understand the hidden agenda of nearly every job interviewer.
Part Two: The Job-Search Solution
Once you’re familiar with some of the problems that are thrown up by a traditional job search, you can consider the best solutions. In lessons 4-10, I give you an action plan that really works.
Lesson 4: Stories
Why the most powerful and convincing way of persuading an employer to hire you is to use a personal narrative, and how story-based pitches serve as an ideal delivery vehicle for the message you want to convey.
Why business stories are so effective, how they engage audiences who are hearing them, and how to create your own professional narrative pitch, including trigger points that grab an interviewer’s immediate attention.
How to emulate the best story tellers of our time by using a classic three-act structure, how to adapt a selection of narrative templates that I give you, and how to shape, define and enhance your own story-based pitch most effectively.
Lesson 5: Audiences
What you need to know about different groups of people who will be the audiences of your stories, why you must dovetail your message with what recruiters need to hear, and what every organisation has in common, whomever you pitch to inside a target employer.
Where to find the best information about an employers’ requirements of any new recruit, why you should never risk going into a job interview blind, and how to demonstrate your key qualities convincingly by making a high impact in front of an audience.
Why you need to adapt your pitch to the individual you’re addressing, why final hiring decision-makers need to hear a different story to lower-level insiders or advocates, and how to create multiple pitches from one core personal narrative.
Lesson 6: Opportunities
Where to find the perfect work opening which satisfies every one of your personal needs and professional goals, and how to identify employers who need your skills and expertise, whether they’re actively recruiting or not.
How to connect your requirements with the demands of employers and the jobs you choose to pitch for, the most effective way to reduce a huge number of opportunities until just a handful remain, and when you’ll know if any work possibility is as valuable as you want it to be.
Which online resources are most useful when you start to investigate potential employers, how to deal with the mechanics of sifting and sorting your raw work opportunities, and the best way of managing your initial research criteria.
Lesson 7: Introductions
Why facilitating personal introductions and engineering direct referrals to key personnel inside your target employer is crucial to your success, the different ways to do this, and how to handle a range of situations by using opening gambits, discussion templates and conversation starters.
The reason that ex-employees of your preferred employer are perfect conduits, how to make initial contact with company outsiders, and how to encourage them to give you high-quality information and make introductory calls to insiders on your behalf.
How to make the jump from speaking with ex-employees to current workers, the process of passing from one contact to another inside target employers, how to create a final introduction to a hiring decision maker, and what to do if you meet resistance along the way.
Lesson 8: Meetings
Why there’s a big difference between traditional job interviews and Vocation Master-style hiring meetings, how a standard-format interview is designed to expose your weaknesses, and the way that my version of a hiring pitch focuses on your strengths.
How to plan and construct the perfect pitch for any kind of hiring meeting, the three essential pillars of job-presentation content that will grab a recruiter’s immediate attention, and why it’s so important to be bold and follow a carefully-structured pitching format.
Why my tried-and-tested pitching format ensures that you go into any hiring meeting with maximum confidence, when to use a visual storyboard to keep your presentation content organised, and how to seamlessly link the four key stages of a successful pitch.
How to take complete control of a hiring meeting’s agenda, structure and outcome, why a winning pitch depends upon high-impact delivery, and how to use advanced presentation techniques to electrify every aspect of any meeting you attend.
Lesson 9: Negotiations
How to handle the transition between a hiring meeting and receiving an employment offer, the reason that most job applicants fail to negotiate the best-possible employment terms, and why maximum bargaining power transfers to you the moment a job offer is made.
How to decide how hard you should negotiate before you accept an offer, how to structure your pay and benefits discussions, what other things should form part of an employment contract, and how to conduct yourself during the first six months with your new employer.
Lesson 10: Strategies
A deeper dive into some of the various job-search strategies I’ve previously touched upon, why an analysis of the single most important contributor to your success is worth thinking about, and how to create rock-solid confidence as you undertake your next work search.
Why it’s crucial to be adventurous yet realistic about your goals, how to find a balance between your ambitions and your limitations, and the qualities that maximisers and satisficers bring to any work task, including a job search of course.
And last, but certainly not least, why you should learn to operate the secret job-hunting weapon that’s at your disposal, why this rarely-used strategy is close to a nailed-on guarantee of job-search success, and the step-by-step instructions in how to use it.

Carmen's Story
Carmen had a problem. With nearly 20 years’ experience in the workplace, having risen to some solid middle-management roles in business administration, her career suddenly hit the buffers. Her mother was unwell and Carmen felt no choice but to prioritise delivery of some hands-on care for a while. This, plus other unavoidable family commitments, meant that she had to take an eighteen-month break from work, but she was now ready to get back into employment.
Unfortunately, she’d also made a couple of bad decisions early in her working life, jumping from one employer to the next, and then on to another within a short time. Trying to get her head straight, Carmen had taken eight months out in order to reappraise her career priorities. What with the significant gaps in her work history, she was suffering from a serious crisis of confidence whenever she looked at her patchy resume, let alone submitted it to potential new employers.
Then Carmen discovered Vocation Master
She quickly understood that there was a simple way of getting in front of an employer that didn’t involve CVs, resumes or application forms. Carmen realised that her worries about the gaps in her career were unfounded and she learnt how to demonstrate her viability as a potential new employee without recourse to a written work history.
Now things were different. She found a fresh confidence in her capabilities, knowing that what she could do for her new employer in the future was much more important than what had happened, or not happened, in the past. Carmen learnt about a far better way of proving her value than relying on the cold facts on her resume. She went on to get hired by a great employer just two weeks into her fresh job search.
Vocation Master benefit #2 – no CVs or resumes
If you’re looking for an employed position with a private-sector organisation, and you’d like to position your work skills ahead of your career history, you’ve come to the right place.
Yoda's Words Of Wisdom
There are two sorts of people in this world – those who decide to do something and usually succeed, and those who only make a half-hearted attempt but invariably fail. In the first part of my free Job Search Workshop you might remember that I quoted Yoda from the second Star Wars film, The Empire Strikes Back.
“Do or do not – there is no try” he tells Luke Skywalker, and it’s these words that I'll ask you to think about as you make your decision to buy my Job Search Masterclass or not.
Are You A "Do" Person Or A "Try" Person?
Are you the sort of person who commits to doing something, or are you someone who only makes a vague try? Your answer to this question will determine your likelihood of success, whether it’s in life, work or seeing a transformation of your career prospects.
If you’re happy to stick with a bad job with a low-quality employer, you’re probably a “try” person.
But if you know that you deserve to do good work for a great employer, you’re definitely a “do” person.
If you’re frustrated, stressed-out or disengaged from your job, and you aren’t doing anything to change your situation, you’re likely to be a “try” person.
But if you’re not prepared to accept another day, week or month (or three) like this, and you choose to follow a better path, you’re certainly a “do” person.
If you work crazy long hours, don’t have much control over your actions and decisions, and earn less money than you believe you deserve, I’m betting that you’re a “try” person.
But if you’ve had enough of a bad employment deal, don’t trust that conventional hiring procedures will work for you, decide to take control of your future, and commit to making your next job the absolute best, most fulfilling and totally satisfying of your entire life, you’re my kind of “do” person.
Luis's Story
Luis was approaching his 60s, undoubtedly successful but work was becoming a grind for him. He’d been there, done that and designed the T-shirt, knowing that this would likely be his last job move within the bespoke clothing business. Above all, he wanted a special role to sign his career off with, one that might wipe away the jaded feeling that was inexorably creeping up on him.
He wanted to make his mark by achieving some kind of vocation status but the right opportunities weren’t coming along within his industry. Frustratingly, all of the available options seemed to be apparent downgrades. He felt powerless over any upward career moves and couldn’t see a clear route ahead.
Then Luis discovered Vocation Master
Having completed the training programme, Luis recognised that he’d been suffering from blinkered beliefs about what was actually possible. Forty years’ experience in the same business had conditioned him to think in conventional terms, but he soon came to assess his options differently. Instead of perceiving a major lack of control regarding his next job move, he made a complete reversal and realised that his only limitations were self-imposed.
Now things were different. Luis realised he could assert agency over every aspect of his work search, then made a reappraisal of his core value system, transferable skillset and professional ambitions, all of which led him to identifying a number of work possibilities within an associated industry. He learnt how to design his ideal job, facilitate inside contacts, then successfully pitch himself as the perfect candidate.
Vocation Master benefit #3 – complete control
If you’re looking for an employed position with a private-sector organisation, and you’d like to totally command work-search events and eliminate barriers to success, you’ve come to the right place.
