My work-search journey: from frustrated job hunter to fulfilled vocation master
I'm Neil Grant...
...and I’m a work-search trainer and interview-skills coach by way of my Vocation Master programme. I help motivated job hunters transform their working lives by doing better work. This process begins by finding better work, and that means adopting a better, more effective job-search strategy.
I’m fortunate enough to work with some of the most-prestigious organisations and highest-achieving professionals in countries throughout Europe. I love my job – it’s a genuine pleasure to do work that’s supremely satisfying, pays me what I'm worth, exploits my full skillset and, not least of all, allows me to assert agency over all of my workplace actions and decisions.
But it wasn't always this way, believe me...
...as in the early days I struggled to find my path and never felt close to achieving my potential. Dull jobs, ineffective bosses, other people pulling my strings, workplace stress, crazy-long hours, minimal job security and that constant living-for-the-weekend feeling.
Trying to improve my situation, I applied for hundreds of jobs, interviewed for dozens of positions and got knocked back from nearly all of them. Surely there was a better way of finding great work, managing the direction of my career and getting my life back on track?
Then I realised what I'd been doing wrong...
...because something suddenly happened. I took a career swerve and got to observe the actions of the best and most-impressive job hunters at first hand. I shifted into a recruiting role, became a professional interviewer and discovered the strategies that set elite workers apart from the failures – people who were just like me, if I’m completely honest about my past.
The big majority of candidates I saw were distinctly ordinary, some were really terrible, but a small group were absolutely fantastic. This tiny handful of peak performers were so far ahead of everyone else that they breezed through job interviews with astonishing ease.
I made it my mission to find the answers to two simple questions...
...which lie at the heart of the job-search conundrum. What were the winning interviewees doing that all of the others weren’t? How were they rising to the top whilst others were sinking to the bottom?
